Stap voor stap: je badkamer schoonmaken (zonder stress)

Step by step: cleaning your bathroom (without stress)

A sparkling bathroom without stress – who wouldn’t want that? Many women (and men!) dread the big bathroom cleaning, but with the right approach it doesn’t have to be a source of stress at all. In this blog, we guide you step by step: from sink to grout and from toilet to mirror. Put on those cleaning gloves, play your favorite music, and before you know it your bathroom will shine like never before. And the best part: we use smart tips and viral cleaning products such as The Pink Stuff and the cheerful Scrub Daddy sponge, making cleaning fun too!

In this step-by-step guide you will find concrete tips, recommended products, and a handy order for each part of the bathroom. This way you keep stress-free cleaning and will be done in no time. No more panic about limescale or soap residue – we will tackle it together, step by step.

Preparation: a good start is half the work

Before we start cleaning, it’s smart to organize and prepare. This prevents you from having to search for things during cleaning and losing unnecessary time. First, remove all loose items from the bathroom: towels, baskets, shampoo bottles on the edge of the tub, toothbrushes, etc. This way you have all surfaces free to clean. If needed, place these items in the hallway or on a towel on the floor.

Next: gather your cleaning supplies. What do you need?

  • A bucket or basin with warm water and optionally a splash of all-purpose cleaner.
  • Various microfiber cloths – ideally a few soft cloths for mirrors and taps, and a few for general cleaning. Microfiber cloths are your best friend: they absorb dirt and moisture very well without leaving streaks.
  • A good scrubbing sponge or brush for stubborn stains. Here comes the beloved Scrub Daddy: this cleverly designed sponge is firm in cold water and soft in warm water, making it suitable for both scrubbing and light cleaning. And it doesn’t scratch! Perfect for sink, shower, and more.
  • Cleaning agents: for example a sanitary cleaner or all-purpose cleaner for general surfaces, an all-purpose cleaner spray with a nice scent, a descaler for taps/shower, toilet gel for the toilet bowl, and optionally a special cleaner for the grout. We recommend products like The Pink Stuff (known for the pink cleaning paste) for stubborn dirt, a Fabulosa spray for daily freshness, and of course refills so you can be sustainable – more on that later.
  • A squeegee for the shower wall or tiles, and optionally an old toothbrush for small corners and grout.
  • Rubber gloves (optional but nice if your skin is sensitive or you work with many cleaning agents).

Got everything ready? Great! Then you won’t have to look for that one brush or spray bottle halfway through – less stress, more focus. Now we start the actual cleaning, completely step by step.

Cleaning the bathroom step by step

  1. Step 1: Clean the sink and tap. Start at the sink, as this is often one of the dirtiest spots (toothpaste splatters, soap residue, limescale). Spray some of your all-purpose cleaner or bathroom cleaner into the basin and on the tap. Let it sit for a minute. Take your Scrub Daddy sponge or a soft brush and scrub the basin well, including the drain stopper and edges. The Scrub Daddy is ideal here: in warm water it becomes soft enough to clean taps without scratching, and in cold water you can tackle hardened toothpaste firmly. Clean the tap with the same sponge or a microfiber cloth. Optionally use a little cleaning vinegar or limescale remover on a cloth for stubborn limescale around the tap base – or try The Pink Stuff cleaning paste for that tricky white haze. Then rinse the sink well and dry everything with a clean microfiber cloth for streak-free shine. You will see: the basin shines and the tap sparkles back at you.
  2. Step 2: Clean the shower or bath. Now that the sink is clean, we tackle the shower cabin or bathtub. First remove loose items like shampoo bottles. Spray all tiles, glass walls, and the tap/shower head with a bathroom cleaner (there are nice options from, for example, Fabulosa with a lovely scent, so your bathroom will not only be clean but also smell nice!). Let the spray soak in while you spray the bathtub (or shower floor) with the same cleaner or a slightly stronger all-purpose cleaner. Then take your sponge or a soft brush. For tiles and grout, optionally use a separate scrubber or that old toothbrush. Dip the The Pink Stuff paste on your sponge to tackle stubborn soap residue or limescale in the shower – this pink paste works wonders against limescale on tiles and taps. Scrub the grout and corners; The Pink Stuff + a bit of scrubbing can lighten yellowed grout. Then rinse everything thoroughly with the shower head (or with buckets of water). For the glass shower door, use a squeegee last to remove water and prevent new limescale drops. Does everything dry streak-free? Take a separate, clean microfiber cloth to dry/polish the glass wall and chrome parts.
  3. Step 3: Tackle the toilet. The toilet may not be everyone’s favorite, but with a structured approach it’s done quickly. Put some toilet gel or cleaner in the bowl and under the rim. Let it soak while you clean the outside. Spray the toilet seat (top and bottom), the rim, the flush button, and the outside of the bowl with a disinfectant spray or all-purpose cleaner. Take a cloth (preferably a different color cloth than for the rest, to avoid cross-contamination) and first clean the flush button, then the lid, then the seat (both sides), and finally the rim and outside of the bowl. Work from clean to less clean surfaces. Optionally use paper towels for really dirty spots and throw them away. Then take the toilet brush and scrub the inside of the bowl well, where the toilet gel has now worked. Don’t forget under the rim. Flush, with the brush still in the bowl to rinse it immediately. Tip: to keep the toilet brush itself clean and odor-free, you can put some all-purpose cleaner or a splash of Fabulosa disinfectant in the brush holder. Now the toilet smells wonderfully fresh – Fabulosa is known for its delightful scents that make cleaning a bit more fun.
  4. Step 4: Wipe furniture and surfaces. Think of bathroom cabinets, shelves, windowsill, radiator, light switches. Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth with a bit of spray (all-purpose cleaner or a Fabulosa spray) to wipe away dust, hairs, and splatters. Work systematically: from top to bottom and from clean to dirty. For example, if you have a cabinet with mirrored doors, clean those first (with a glass cleaner or vinegar mix for streak-free results), and only then the bottom or inside. The radiator can collect a lot of dust; a Swiffer or dust cloth between the slats works wonders. Don’t forget the bathroom door handle – everyone often touches that with dirty hands, so a quick disinfecting won’t hurt.
  5. Step 5: Make mirrors and glass shine. Now that the biggest tasks are done, we focus on the mirrors. A clean mirror gives the whole bathroom a fresh look. Preferably use a special glass cleaner or simply a mixture of half water, half cleaning vinegar in a spray bottle. Lightly spray the mirror (not too wet) and wipe off with a dry, clean microfiber cloth used only for glass. Pro tip: clean in circular motions and then work from top to bottom to push any streaks to the edge. Having trouble getting streak-free? An old crumpled newspaper can also help to polish. In no time you’ll see yourself clearly in the mirror without toothpaste splatters. If you have glass shower doors and they still look a bit cloudy: repeat the same method there. But if all went well, you already tackled those in step 2 with the squeegee and cloth, so they are probably fine.
  6. Step 6: Mop the floor last. Finally, we do the floor. Because we did all the higher work first, dust and dirt may now lie on the floor – exactly why you always do the floor last. First sweep or vacuum the loose dirt particles (hairs, dust, etc.). Then fill a bucket with warm water and a splash of all-purpose cleaner or floor cleaner. You can use, for example, the The Pink Stuff floor cleaner if you have it, or otherwise a capful of your favorite all-purpose cleaner. Mop the floor thoroughly, starting in the farthest corner and working toward the door so you leave the bathroom walking backward without stepping on your clean floor. Let the floor dry (opening a window helps, and there is probably a nice fresh scent now!).

And that’s it! If all went well, your entire bathroom now shines. You tackled each part step by step and didn’t have to make unnecessary effort anywhere. A structured approach really reduces stress: you know what to do after each step and see your bathroom getting cleaner and fresher along the way. High five to yourself, you just pulled this off!

Our favorite tools for a sparkling bathroom

During the steps you already got to know some top products. Here we list our recommended cleaning helpers again, plus why we are so enthusiastic about them:

  • The Pink Stuff – This pink cleaning paste is a true miracle for stubborn dirt. From ingrained limescale soap in the shower to stains in the sink: The Pink Stuff gets it clean. Just put a little on a sponge, rub it in, rinse, and your tiles or tap will shine again. Moreover, it is 100% natural and vegan, so you can clean with peace of mind.
  • Scrub Daddy sponge – This cheerful yellow sponge has gone viral on social media for good reason. It is soft in warm water and hard in cold water, making it multi-purpose. Just run it under warm water and you can clean delicate surfaces, under cold water it becomes firm enough to scrub hardened soap residue. Plus: that smiling face is not only cute but also functional (the “mouth” is handy to clean your tap or shower head through for 360° cleaning). And did you know it doesn’t stink? It dries within an hour, so bacteria don’t get a chance. A must-have in every bathroom cleaning kit.
  • Fabulosa cleaning products – Honestly, cleaning is much more fun with cleaning agents that smell nice. Fabulosa is a British brand known for its delightful scents in household products. Think of scents like “Twilight Bouquet” or “Fresh Linen” found in sprays, all-purpose cleaners, and even laundry perfumes. But besides the nice scent, they clean well too! Their bathroom and kitchen cleaners contain powerful formulas that tackle grease and dirt, while your bathroom smells like a luxury perfume afterwards. Win-win. Try, for example, the Fabulosa Bicarb Cleaner Spray (with baking soda for extra degreasing power) – bloggers love it because it cleans super well and leaves no streaks.
  • Microfiber cloths – We already said it, but microfiber is worth its weight in gold in the household. A good set of microfiber cloths (preferably in different colors for different uses) makes cleaning so much easier. They pick up dust and dirt better than old T-shirts or sponges, and you can wipe glass and mirrors streak-free. Our tip: keep a pink set of cloths separate for the toilet, and another color for sink/shower. This keeps it hygienic. Wash them after use at 60°C without fabric softener, and they last a long time. By the way, The Pink Stuff also has its own pink microfiber cleaning cloths in the range, for fans of matchy-matchy cleaning gear.
  • Refills & concentrates – Since we’re at it, let’s pause on sustainability. Many cleaning brands (like The Pink Stuff and Fabulosa) now offer concentrated refills. For example, The Pink Stuff Power Drops – small capsules you dissolve in a spray bottle with water, so you can refill your cleaning spray bottle each time instead of buying a new one. This saves plastic and is budget-friendly. And for detergent or fabric softener you might have seen the Fabulosa laundry perfume: an ultra-concentrated scent essence that makes your laundry smell wonderful without having to buy expensive fabric softener bottles all the time. Smart, right? So we say: invest in refills. You always have something in stock and reduce waste. In our webshop you’ll find various refill options and concentrates under “refills” – definitely check it out!

Make cleaning fun (really!)

You might be thinking now: yeah yeah, “fun”… But believe us, with the right mindset and tools bathroom cleaning can be a feel-good moment. A few tips to keep it light and homely:

  • Play music or a podcast: Nothing motivates like singing along to your favorite song while scrubbing. Or listen to a fun podcast; before you know it, half an hour has passed and your bathroom is clean without you noticing.
  • Use nice scents: We already mentioned it with Fabulosa – a nice scent during and after cleaning gives satisfaction. For example, spray a bit of Fabulosa home perfume in the room afterwards or light a scented candle. This way you associate cleaning with something positive, namely a nice scent in the house.
  • Work in small blocks: If you really dread a big clean, break it up. For example, do the sink and toilet in the morning, and the shower in the evening. Or spread it over two days. Better to take a bit longer than to postpone until your bathroom is a war zone. Step by step = less stress.
  • Involve the family: Do you have children? Let them “help” with small tasks, like wiping the sink with a cloth. With Scrub Daddy they will probably want to clean a tap, just because that sponge is so fun. Make a game of who can create the most shine. This way it becomes a joint project instead of a lonely task.
  • Reward yourself: Agree that after cleaning you do something nice. A warm bath in your now clean bathroom, a face mask, or just a cup of tea with a piece of chocolate on the couch. That bathroom shines now – you really pulled it off – and that deserves a celebration!

Hopefully you noticed that cleaning a bathroom with a good plan is quite manageable. By doing it step by step and using the right products, you can clean stress-free and maybe even enjoy the process a bit. And the result is impressive: a fresh, hygienic bathroom you use with a smile. No mold spots to be found, the taps shine, and there is a pleasant scent. Mission accomplished!
